Discovering Discovering Christ
Always open to the leading of the Spirit, the Pastoral Team of the Community of God’s Love (CGL) met with Father John Wassell, Administrator of Our Lady of Sorrows (OLS) Parish in Kearny. He and the church’s Parish Council were looking for a program to strengthen the sense of community in their parish. The CGL Pastoral Team suggested the Discovering Christ program, a nine-part dinner/talk/discussion series developed by Christ Life Catholic Ministry for Evangelism in Baltimore. Early last spring, the parish group “bought into” the program, and teams were formed to bring the plan to life. Because of their experience in running conferences and various church-related programs, and their individual experience in preparing and presenting talks at Pre-Cana, Life in the Spirit, Engaged and Marriage Encounter, and Cursillo programs, the CGL took on the tasks of leading the overall program, writing and presenting the nine talks, and providing music and the Master of Ceremonies for the weekly programs, which were held at the OLS Parish Hall. The OLS team was charged with recruiting candidates and planning and preparing the meals that begin each session. After many meetings of the joint teams and preparation of the talks, the program began in early October with nearly 30 candidates. The programs began each week with prayer and song followed by dinner, a speaker, and table discussions. It ended the week before Thanksgiving to rave reviews from the candidates who expressed the desire to have their parish conduct more community-building events.
The program is directed towards the development and deepening of a personal relationship with Jesus. In addition to the talks presented at the weekly sessions, a day-long retreat is held towards the end of the program. Discovering Christ helps participants enter into or renew a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, experience the love of God the Father, and be empowered by the Holy Spirit to live as God’s children. It also gives participants the relational support necessary to live for Christ within the parish or group that offers the course.
The program was so successful that the CGL has established a ministry to consult, assist, and help present Discovering Christ to parishes wishing to explore this community-building program. If you think that your parish might be interested in sponsoring a Discovering Christ program, call the CGL Secretary at 201-935-0344 or email for further information.

Garden and Labyrinth Dedicated
On Saturday, June 9th, members and friends of the Community of God’s Love (CGL) gathered to dedicate the new prayer garden and labyrinth adjacent to Our Lady of the Visitation House, 70 West Passaic Avenue, Rutherford.
Father Philip Latronico, the CGL Chaplain, blessed the sites during the formal ceremony which included prayer and biblical readings.
Work on the prayer garden began late last summer with excavation and garden bed preparation, the laying of the paved walkways, and the planting of trees, shrubs, and perennial plants. Annual plants have been added to provide seasonal color and interest. Two sturdy, park-quality steel benches provide resting places for those seeking peaceful contemplation.
Early last fall, work began on transforming the CGL’s chalk-marked labyrinth with curbstone guidelines. New soil was added and grass planted. The labyrinth is now permanent and fully grassed, ready for use. Labyrinths can be traced back 3,500 years. Throughout history, pilgrims have travelled to holy sites to encounter the sacred and to renew their faith. With the challenges and concerns of modern life, the labyrinth offers a way to journey in faith, a modern pilgrimage of sorts, to find stillness, rest and grace. Instructions to help beginners walk the labyrinth are available in a well-marked, waterproof container at the labyrinth site. Both the garden and labyrinth are open to all, and people are encouraged to walk in whenever they need a place to relax, pray and find peace.
The CGL is a Roman Catholic Charismatic Community located in Rutherford. Now In its 48th year, the Community grew out of prayer meetings at the Newman Center, the Catholic students' center at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
